What this year was really about
Six threads ran through the whole week, from the opening keynote to the closing day.
- A chip show that became an AI-infrastructure show
Cloud and hyperscaler names — Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Broadcom, Meta, Micron — took top billing alongside TSMC, MediaTek and ASE for the first time. Google's Amin Vahdat opened the CEO Forum with his first public keynote in Asia, and used it to announce a 60% expansion of Google's Shilin R&D centre, calling Taiwan its largest hardware engineering base outside the US.
- Silicon photonics and CPO were the loudest theme
Optical interconnect was framed as the fix for AI's bandwidth and power wall. TSMC put numbers on its COUPE platform, and 2026 was repeatedly called the year optical links go from demo to deployment.
- Advanced packaging got its own pavilion — and its own bottleneck
A new Chiplet Pavilion joined the packaging zone, while ASE and MediaTek used their stage time to flag manufacturing-capacity limits rather than to celebrate demand.
- Quantum and smart fab arrived as first-class zones
Two zones debuted this year: a Quantum Technology Zone covering superconducting, ion-trap and annealing paths, and a Smart Fab Zone showing collaborative and humanoid robots, digital twins and industrial AI on the fab floor.
- The industry's yardstick got redrawn mid-show
SEMI pulled its US$1 trillion revenue milestone forward from 2030 to this year and now projects US$2 trillion by 2030. Equipment forecasts moved with it — 2026 wafer fab equipment spend up 23.1% to about US$144bn, and TSMC signalling 2026 capex approaching US$64bn.
- Record international scale, with geopolitics on the main stage
The global pavilion drew a record 18 countries. President Lai used the Semicon Network Summit to pitch Taiwan's ecosystem as a resilience play, and a US undersecretary called semiconductors the most important technology of our lifetime.
